Washaw Sibi was recognized as the tenth Cree Nation at the 2003 Annual General Assembly of the Grand Council of the Crees / Cree Nation Government.
The members of Cree Nation Washaw Sibi have been displaced and scattered for decades throughout many different Cree and Non-Cree communities because of provincial and federal government laws and policies.
But the Washaw Sibi Eeyou continue to assert their rights as a Cree Nation and pursue their vision of building the 10th Cree Community of Eeyou Istchee.
Incorporated as a non-profit organization since 1997, the Washaw Sibi Eeyou Association, better known as the Cree Nation of Washaw Sibi, acts as the governing body who represents the interests and the rights of its members.
The mission of the Washaw Sibi Eeyou Association is to get legal recognition from Quebec and Canada to formally become the 10th Cree Nation of Eeyou Istchee.
The head office of the Washaw Sibi Eeyou Association is located in Nemaska and its administrative office is in Amos. While the Cree Nation of Washaw Sibi moves toward building a community, it has temporarily settled its cultural camp at Joulac about 115 km north of Amos.
Our vision is of a strong people who are proud of our identity and language in exercising our rights as a Cree First Nation. We seek to be a united community where stability and good governance provide the foundation for healthy families, thriving youth and healed spirits as our elders and leaders help us to unite the unique streams of our history into a river of hope and prosperity for future generations.
